API Manager migration

Migrating an API Manager is one of those projects that looks like a configuration exercise and turns out to be an architecture exercise. Whether you are moving off 3scale, consolidating gateways, or shifting to a cloud-native platform, the difference between a clean cutover and a production incident comes down to a handful of decisions made early. Here are the five that matter most.

1. Choose your migration strategy. There are two mainstream paths. Progressive migration moves traffic API by API and is strongly recommended for large estates: you route traffic gradually, keep both systems compatible during the transition, and build fallback safety so any API can be rolled back independently. Comparatively, Lift and shift moves everything at once — faster, but only advisable when you have a genuinely good test suite and can validate every system in non-production first.

2. Credentials and URLs migration. Before committing to a date, confirm that you can actually migrate credentials, keys and authentication schemes. Auth models rarely map one-to-one between platforms, and this is the single most common source of migration incidents. Inventory every consumer and every credential type up front.

3. Test cases. In most estates the existing test coverage is not what you’d want it to be. Treat the migration as the moment to create new tests and complement the existing ones — contract tests, auth flows, rate-limiting behaviour and error paths. This is what lets you move production traffic with confidence.

4. Latency. If the target is a cloud version, review the latency between systems. A hop that was local can become a cross-region round trip, and a poorly sized network path quietly degrades the consumer experience even when everything is “working”.

5. URL compatibility. Path and contract compatibility is critical. Plan redirects, versioning and backward-compatible routing so existing consumers don’t break the moment you switch. Where a URL must change, coordinate it as a versioned, communicated change — never a silent one.

How CloudAPPI helps. We migrate API Managers with our clients end to end — strategy, credential mapping, test design, latency validation and consumer-safe routing — API by API and without surprises. Contact us to plan your migration.
